IPL provides tips to reduce bill as temperatures rise

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL) is providing tips to its customers as temperatures rise to above 90 degrees and heat indexes are expected to get into triple digits this weekend.

The free and easy ways to reduce home use and manage your summer utility bill include:

  • Turn up thermostats when away from home or while sleeping;
  • Open cooling vents or registers and remove anything covering them;
  • Close all doors and windows when air conditioning is on;
  • Close windows and blinds during the day;
  • Turn off lights and use energy efficient light bulbs that give off less heat;
  • Reduce air leakage by sealing leaks to keep cool air inside home
  • Avoid using oven and stove on hot days; use a microwave or gill outdoors;
  • Use bathroom exhaust fan when showering or bathing to help eliminate humidity problems
  • Caulk, seal and apply weather stripping around doors, windows and screens
  • Landscaping can provide shade to home and reduce cooling costs
  • Turn off unneeded lights and heat-producing appliances
