Fishers neighbors come together following KKK letter distribution

FISHERS, Ind (WISH) – After Ku Klux Klan letters arrived on their yards, Fishers residents are using the hateful message to come together.

Millicent Olsby has dozens of the letters in a trash bag in her home. “There must be 50 to 100 or more,” Olsby said.

She ripped open a bag read what was inside. “What will you tell your children? Wake up, White America, and take a stand,” the letter read.

The same bag, filled with a hateful message against minorities, lined her east side Fishers street Sunday.

“It just makes no sense,” Olsby said. “I can’t say anything else, it’s just pitiful. It’s pathetic.”

Olsby said the bags arrived while people slept. Hours later, neighbors removed each one.

Melvin Payton heard about the letter, but didn’t read it until Monday. The Fishers teen was shocked to see the literature on his block.

“It’s also a wake up call, because when I look at the Bible and read it, I get a different meaning from what they’re getting,” Payton said. “And it’s interesting that that’s what people can take from a book like that.”

Officers said there’s nothing illegal with throwing them on people’s yards, however, police are a little concerned at the time it happened, and are urging people to call them if it happens again.

While the letter calls for whites to take action against minorities, Payton is thankful neighbors, including Olsby, did, but in a way to show support toward his family.

“That did feel good,” Payton said. “That did feel good because you know that there’s still good people out there. You know what I’m saying? You can’t speak for all when you’re talking about a few.”

The letters are addressed from the United Northern and Southern Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. On its website, the group says it promotes action in a non-violent way.

We reached out to the organization to ask about why it targeted this neighborhood, but we have not heard back.
