Curly Hair Is In!

Did you hear? Curly hair is in… and since it’s summer, why not embrace those curls, whether it’s by nature or by choice! KKBB Curly Hair Specialist Lauren Shoaf will walk us through how to “set” their curls at home.

Top 5 tips for working with Curly Hair1. Less is more

Don’t touch your hair too much when it’s wet. When you’re working with curly hair the less you touch your hair (after conditioner) the better of a result you will get. The more you touch your hair when wet (after conditioner) the more frizz you will have.2. Don’t use sulfates or silicones

Product ingredients are important. Sulfates are the main ingredient found in most drugstore brand shampoos on today’s market. This ingredient completely strips the hair of all natural oils and by doing so makes hair already on the drier side even more dry. Silicones are commonly found in most curly conditioners and styling products on the market. This ingredient adds slip, however, it acts as a water barrier and therefore is drying to hair and can cause buildup which deflates curls.3. What you do in the shower counts

Cleanser – Massaging your cleanser at your scalp in circular motions helps to cleanse the area without causing frizz to the region

Conditioner – Using your fingers to detangle your hair and work the conditioner through your hair in the shower is going to moisturize your curls without the damage a comb or brush can cause to your curl

Style – Applying your styling products into the hair wet may be one of the most beneficial things you can do for your curls. It traps the moisture in the hair instead of out of it

Deep Condition – This should be done once a month minimum to quench your curls4. Change your products with the seasons

Don’t be afraid to switch it up – As the seasons rotate we have different levels of moisture in the air. Changing your products will help drastically with battling the Indiana climate. Don’t forget that finding the best styling product for you and understanding how it works with your curl type is key to this step.

Summer– Using a styling product that has more hold during these humid months may be in your best interest.

Winter– Using a styling product that has more moisture during these drier months may be in your best interest.5. No brushes or combs in dry hair

This can damage your hair. Curly hair grows circularly therefore running a flat tool through it can truly pull and damage your curls. If you follow our other guidelines there will be no need for this anyways!
