Police searching for suspect in attempted sexual assault of child

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Police are looking for a suspect who illegally entered a home and attempted to assault a child sexually.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the break-in and attempted sexual assault occurred just after 5:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 1400 block of South Belmont Street.

After arriving on the scene, authorities learned that an adult male either in his 30’s or 40’s, broke into the home. The occupants of the house were sleeping when the man broke in and attempted to assault the child.

“There’s a lot of kids that live over here that I see you know at that parks or just in and out, walking down the street and everything…it’s very scary to know that he’s still out there and they haven’t found him,” said Velensia Rhodes. Rhodes often works in the area and spends time at a nearby park.

“He’s a very sick guy and I hope they find him. I hope that he gets what he deserves and prayers go out to the family as well,” said Rhodes.

The suspect has been described as a white male weighing approximately 170 and 195 pounds, between 5’8″ and 5’10” tall.  Police said the suspect was wearing dark blue shorts with yellow stripping or flames on the side of the shorts.

The suspect is still on the run and the case remains under investigation.

Police are urging those who live in the area to remain vigilant and make sure their doors and windows remain locked.
