Caught on camera: Man steals 5 guns from Indy home, rides off on bicycle

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Police are asking for your help finding a person who stole five guns from a man’s garage on the south side of Indianapolis.

The theft, which was caught on security cameras, happened at 9 p.m. Monday in the 1400 block of East Southern Avenue. The victim says the theft took less than three minutes, and he returned home minutes later.

He says the man stole a 12-gauge shotgun, three rifles and a pellet gun. Surveillance video shows him riding away on a bicycle with the guns.

“Anytime you have this type of capacity — firearms on the street of Indianapolis — it’s certainly a danger for our officers and it’s a danger for our community,” IMPD Sgt. Kendale Adams said.

This is the second large cache of guns stolen in Indianapolis within a matter of days.

Eleven guns were stolen last week from a Gander Mountain store in Castleton. That case is still open, and so is this new one.

“We don’t know what the intent of these individuals are, and that’s why it’s very important that someone come forward,” Adams added.

The urgency in finding the guns is evident in the timing of this theft.

The homeowner says he couldn’t file the police report until Tuesday morning because on Monday night most of the police in the city were responding to an officer shot on the north side. Because of the timing, the two incidents aren’t believed to be connected.

The victim says there were no signs of damage to the house or to the garage where he kept the guns locked up.

But the video shows the man attempted to steal his television, only to drop it while going down the alley.
