80-year-old arrested after police chase involving RV

CARROLL COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – An 80-year-old Illinois man was arrested Thursday evening, after police said he led them on a chase in an RV and tried to force police cars off the road.

It started with a domestic violence call in northern Carroll County just after 4 p.m. Callers said the suspect left the scene in a 1994 Winnebago RV.

Deputies spotted an RV matching that description heading south on U.S. 421, northwest of Delphi. A press release from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office said the RV was driving erratically and refused to stop for officers.

A chase ensued westbound on State Road 18, into White County. The RV then turned north on White County Road 300 East. Authorities said it was driving aggressively. They said at several times during the chase, the driver attempted to hit squad cars or drive them off the road.

Authorities said the speed of the pursuit ranged from 40-80 miles an hour. It ended shortly after Monticello police deployed stop sticks in the area of 300 East and 400 South in White County. The stop sticks succeeded in deflating one of the RV’s tires. It came to rest in a ditch near that intersection.

Police took Rolla Samson of Danville, Illinois, into custody. He faces preliminary charges of domestic battery, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon (his vehicle), resisting law enforcement (vehicular), and battery on law enforcement.

He is being held in the Carroll County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
