IFD rescues teen from Columbia Club elevator shaft

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indianapolis Fire Department rescued a teenager from an elevator shaft at the Columbia Club.

According to IFD, the incident happened around 9:30 p.m. Saturday night.

Emergency crews initially responded to a call of a person stuck on top of an elevator between the ninth and 10th floors.

Authorities said two workers were in the elevator going from the fourth to the 10th floor when the elevator shut down automatically and then they heard someone screaming for help.

Crews soon saw that  the 17-year-old male was hanging upside down, unable to move, trapped between the elevator and the shaft wall.

Firefighters were eventually able to get the freight elevator doors open wide enough to get the teenager out just after 10 p.m.

The teen told firefighters that he was staying at the hotel and was playing around in the elevator shaft which he accessed at the 8th floor.

The two workers were also successfully extricated from the elevator by firefighters.

The teenager was transported to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in good condition with only minor injuries.

Both of the workers were treated and released at the scene.
