Anderson coach found passed out in vehicle with BAC of 0.11

ANDERSON, Ind. (WISH) – The Anderson high school coach who was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated was found passed out near a pizza shop over the weekend, according to a police report.

Phillip Washington was taken into custody Saturday morning and later released on bond. He faces a preliminary charge of operating while intoxicated, according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department. Washington is the head boys’ basketball coach at Anderson High School.

According to the report, Washington was passed out behind the wheel near a Pizza King on Nichol Avenue. His vehicle was partially in the northbound lanes of the road. Police say the car was not in park and they had to wake up Washington so he could change gears.

In the report, Washington told the officer that he had been drinking in Indianapolis and knew he would test over the legal limit. His BAC was 0.11.

The district’s assistant superintendent released a statement saying Washington has been placed on administrative leave while an internal investigation is underway.

Earlier this year, Washington was suspended as coach of the Crispus Attucks High School boys’ basketball team for allowing students to join the basketball team prior to them transferring from a different school.
