Police: Sergeant’s shooting may have been self-inflicted

ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) – A day after Travis County Sgt. Craig Hutchinson’s funeral, the Round Rock police chief said Hutchinson was shot by his own weapon.

Round Rock Police Chief Allen Banks says while the department is still gathering all the facts in the case to determine what happened during the early morning hours of July 25, they are including “possibilities of homicide or that it was self-inflicted.” An analysis of the projectile found at the scene “indicates that the projectile came from Sgt. Hutchinson’s weapon,” which was also recovered at the scene.

Hutchinson, 54, was shot at his home on Oak Meadow Drive in the Cimmaron neighborhood. The deputy had just finished his shift and was at home when he radioed the department around 1:22 a.m. saying he saw “prowlers” in his backyard.

Police say they have processed more than 150 pieces of evidence and canvassed 233 homes in the neighborhood searching for any leads in the case. The evidence that has been collected has been sent to a forensics lab for further testing. Investigators are also combing through surveillance video from nearby homes and businesses for any valuable information.

On July 29, Travis County Sheriff Greg Hamilton said they had no leads in the case and no arrests. He pleaded with the community to come forward with any tips they might have. Banks would not take any questions from the media and would only say that investigation is still “ongoing and active.” Before he walked out of the room with Sheriff Hamilton, he asked everyone to “keep Sgt. Huchinson’s family, friends and community in your thoughts and prayers.
