4 teens arrested in Tippecanoe Co. after taking SUV for joyride

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Four teenagers were arrested after the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office said they were found in a stolen vehicle on Interstate 65 early Friday morning.

The vehicle, a 2016 Chevrolet Suburban, was reported stolen from the Frankfort area around 12:45 a.m. The sheriff’s office credited the Suburban’s OnStar system with finding the SUV.

Deputies were able to trace the Suburban to the northbound lanes of I-65 in Tippecanoe County. Once OnStar was notified that the SUV was being pursued by law enforcement, it disabled the vehicle on the bridge over the Wabash River.

Four teens were found inside the SUV and were taken into custody. The driver was a 15-year-old female. Another female and two males were the passengers. Deputies said they ranged in ages from 15 to 17 years old. Two of the teens were from Clinton County, one was from Boone County and another was from Allen County.

Deputies found a stolen .38 special revolver on one of the male passengers. It will be returned to the owner once the investigation clears.

The Suburban has already been recovered and returned to the owner. It sustained no major damage.

The sheriff’s office said the gun and the Suburban did not belong to the same person.

Since the teenagers are minors, their names will not be released at this time.
