Truck narrowly misses hitting ISP trooper, causes 5-vehicle crash
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Indiana state trooper had a close call Monday evening on I-465 near the airport.
State police say Trooper Arturo Azcona III was working a crash on the left side of I-465 westbound when a truck hit his cruiser around 6 p.m.
Azcona had to jump over a railing to keep from getting hit.
His vehicle was pushed across the interstate to the right shoulder, starting a five-vehicle, chain-reaction crash.
No one was injured in the collisions.
Investigators believe the truck driver, 35-year-old Chad Campton of Indianapolis, swerved to avoid hitting slow traffic when he crashed into Azcona’s car.
Campton faces preliminary charges of driving with a suspended license and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
“Fortunately there were no injuries in this crash, yet this is a reminder of the importance of slowing down and/or moving over for emergency vehicles, including police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, tow trucks, roadside repair vehicles and construction vehicles,” Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine said in a media release.
