Indy airport faces Delta outage aftermath

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) -Travel woes aren’t over for Delta customers flying out of Indianapolis International Airport. More than 100 customers lined up at the airport – many of them looking for answers — by noon Tuesday.

The airline cancelled more than 500 flights Tuesday, one day after they cancelled 1,000 flights. Company leaders said they’re still recovering from an outage at their Atlanta hub.

Dale Skaggs of Indianapolis hopped in line three hours early only to learn his flight couldn’t leave Tuesday. He switched to an American Airlines flight to start his Florida vacation.

“I’m okay. I’m happy I got a flight,” Skaggs said. “I feel bad for everybody waiting in line because the reality is, most of them don’t know what they’re going to be doing.”

Delta also delayed more than 200 flights Tuesday.

Message boards at IND showed only a handful of flights in red, but employees told passengers their flight status could change.

As of noon, Anne Royer and her family didn’t know what time they’d leave.

“It’s certainly surprising,” Royer said. “This hasn’t happened since I was very young. I remember lines like this when I was a kid.”

Delta is offering refunds to passengers on cancelled or significantly delayed flights.

If your flight is cancelled or delayed more than three hours, Delta gives you a $200 travel voucher.

None of that takes the stress away from Rebecca Houghton. She checked online Monday night, saw her flight delayed, and showed up at the airport only to find her flight cancelled. She returned Tuesday and – once again – wound up on a delayed flight.

“I know there’s nothing I can do about it,” Houghton said. “Absolutely nothing I can do. I know there’s someone in control and I’m not. I’m really letting the Lord take care of it.”

In a tweet on Tuesday, Delta said delays for Wednesday flights are possible. They’re encouraging passengers to keep an eye on their flight status online.
