Author looks to make a difference with new book

“Never do I hear kids in kindergarten say, ‘I want to go to jail when I grow up or I want to get shot and killed when I’m sixteen.” That’s a pretty heavy, but powerful statement from Author Corey James, Author, “Painting Pictures: Reframing the World of Inner-City Youth.”

Today on Indy Style, Corey chats with Amber about the disease that’s “plaguing our inner-city youth and communities.” Corey explains that the epidemic is targeting the potential dreams of every young person who grows up in the inner-city. says James, who explains in his book just how important it is to mentor our inner-city children and help them see the many positive opportunities that the world has to offer.

Since the cycle of violence, drug use, and criminal activities are the norm in these communities, we have low expectations that things will ever improve. Many of our young people don’t recognize all the buried treasures that lie within them because no one has ever told them they are special. Our job is to hand them a paint brush to teach them how to paint pictures that include a quality education, a healthy lifestyle, and a bright future.

Corey adds, ” We can’t be their biological dad, but we can be influential in creating successful young men and young ladies. We can paint the pictures that they desperately need to see. We can be mentors and role models who can be instrumental in changing the outlook of our inner-city youth.”
