New co-working space opening in Broad Ripple area
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A new co-working space called The Hatch is set to open near Broad Ripple next week.
24-Hour News 8 has covered the growth of co-working spaces in recent years, especially among the tech community. People can pay to work in co-working spaces, instead of buying or renting an office building of their own.
The founders of The Hatch told 24-Hour News 8 their environment is different, because it’s geared toward creative industries like art, design or advertising.
“We’re not just closed to the creative community, we’re really here for anyone who wants to infuse creativity throughout their day,” said founder and CEO Jen Handley.
Handley and her business partner Ben Carlson, were looking for a space to expand their company, but didn’t want a place with a traditional or corporate office feel. Instead, they wanted a place that would encourage creativity. When they couldn’t find it, they decided to build it themselves.
“It’s ramping up fast. We’re getting a lot of interest from a really great mix of people,” said Handley.
People can choose from a variety of options in order to work at The Hatch. People can buy a day pass, full or part-time membership or they rent out a dedicated office space inside the building. There are open tables for collaboration in addition to small private rooms.
There is a creative studio filled with painting easels, drawing boards, photography tools and equipment for podcasts. Handley said she hopes the space creates a sense of community among members.
“I think in a market like Indianapolis we’ve worked the same way for so long. There’s corporate culture, there’s corporate cool. There’s been small evolutions of that — but we really just want to change the way people work. We want to inspire people to be their most creative selves,” said Handley.
Handley said the space doesn’t force people to collaborate with others if they don’t want to. Handley said there is also plenty of space for private work.
Prices range anywhere from $40 a day to nearly $700 a month. The Hatch is doing a soft launch right now, but they’ll have their grand opening on Monday.
