Judge: No jail time for CPR instructor who embezzled $7K in class fees
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The former Division Chief of EMS for St. Joseph Township Fire and Rescue in Fort Wayne will serve no jail time for pocketing some $7,000 he collected from CPR classes he taught.
Robert A Grayless, 50, of New Haven was sentenced in Allen Superior Court to two years of probation for one count of theft, the fallout from an Indiana State Police and Allen County Sheriff’s Department five-month investigation last year.
Police said then that Grayless took in more than $9,000 from classes he taught from June 2013 to December 2014. The money collected from the classes should have been turned into the St. Joseph Township Trustee. Investigators found that just over $2,000 had actually been turned in, though.
The investigation began after the St. Joseph Township Fire Chief and Trustee went to the police in February 2015. Fire Chief David Ringer had noticed that the fees collected for a class didn’t add up to the number of students in attendance.
Grayless, a 25-year public employee hired by the township fire department in January 2013, was quickly fired. He was then arrested and charged with two counts of theft.
According to court records, Grayless was ordered to repay $4,500 to the St. Joe Trustee and the St. Joe Fire Department.
