Officer shoots man who pointed rifle at southern IN police

SEYMOUR, Ind. (AP) – Indiana State Police say a southern Indiana policeman shot and wounded an 80-year-old man who pointed a rifle at officers.

Sgt. Stephen Wheeles says 80-year-old Alvin Otte was treated at a hospital for a non-life-threatening injury following the shooting early Tuesday. He says Otte remains at the hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Wheeles says officers investigating a report of a gunshot inside a home where Otte was the lone resident heard more shots there after their arrival there. After Otte emerged from the home and pointed his rifle at officers, Officer Michael Payne shot him in the arm, and Otte put the weapon down.

Wheeles says the Seymour Police Department placed Payne on paid administrative leave under standing policy.

No charges have been filed. An investigation is continuing.
