Officers suffer smoke inhalation after pulling suspect from burning vehicle

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man was seriously hurt and multiple police officers suffered smoke inhalation after a pursuit ended in a crash on the east side of the city.

According to IMPD, a man involved in a domestic dispute in the area of Old Trails Road and East Washington Street, led police on a chase that reached at least 100 mph.

Responding officers initially spotted the vehicle near Cecil Avenue and East Washington Street around 7:30 p.m. Friday evening.  When officers started to approach the vehicle, it then sped off and vehicle pursuit ensued.

Later, the driver proceeded to get onto I-465 and merged onto I-70 eastbound.  However, with the wet road conditions and the high speed, the chase was called off.

An officer later spotted the car near 33rd Street and Post Road heading north in the southbound lanes. It crashed into an SUV a short time later.

The suspect’s car caught fire and he was pinned inside. The driver was taken to Sidney & Lois Eskanazi Hospital in serious to critical condition. Police said the suspect did have a gun in the vehicle.

13 officers who worked to get him out were treated for smoke inhalation, three of those officers did suffer serious injuries due to smoke inhalation.

People inside the SUV were not hurt.

The suspect has not been identified.
