Police find woman living in rat-infested storage unit with young son

PFLUGERVILLE, Texas (KXAN) – A mother has been arrested after Pflugerville police found her and her 7-year-old son living in a storage unit with drugs and rats, according to an arrest affidavit.

Police were called to the 1825 Place Apartments at 15835 Foothill Farms Loop Aug. 11 after a 911 caller said a man who smelled like urine was sleeping in a storage unit at the complex armed with an assault rifle. As soon as officers arrived they immediately noted the strong smell of ammonia permeating around the locked unit. Inside, police discovered a mother and child on the floor next to an assault rifle.

The mother has been identified as 36-year-old Carissa Esther Chancey. Searching the unit, police located rats, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, used syringes and a substance that tested positive for methamphetamine.

The 7-year-old boy was transported to a hospital for treatment after police discovered an infected injury on his foot. The boy told police he hadn’t eaten in over a day and that they had been in the unit since the day before. Officers described him in the affidavit as dirty, without shoes, and wearing torn clothing.

Chancey faces charges for abandoning and endangering a child, and possession of a controlled substance. She is being held on a $40,000 bond.
