Ohio woman thanks Good Samaritan after being hit by drunk driver on I-70

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Ohio woman is still recovering in the hospital more than a week after being hit by a drunk driver going the wrong way on I-70.

The fiery crash happened near mile marker 85 last Sunday.

Martha Brice, 42, said she is thankful for help from the community during her recovery.

Brice was sitting in the passenger seat with her daughter, who was driving, and her 11-year-old grandson, who was sleeping in the backseat. They saw the headlights from the other car with a female driver behind the wheel.

“We tried to avoid her, every time we avoided her it was like deer in a headlight, she was just following us,” said Brice. “I told my daughter wait until she gets close enough and then just go to your left as sharp as you can and let the impact come in on my side, the passenger side.”

Brice is recovering at the hospital with two broken legs, a broken sternum, spinal damage, and cuts and bruises on her body. She said she could have died that night had it not been for her guardian angel.

“I remember telling him please don’t leave me, I don’t want to die,” Brice said.

Brice said she doesn’t remember much from that early morning on the interstate. They were driving to Ohio from Arizona when they were hit head on by another driver going the wrong way.

“You know she could have took my life that night and took me away from my grandkids and my kids,” said Brice. “People drinking and driving, they shouldn’t be drinking and driving.”

Police said Felicia Wallace, 23, was behind the wheel driving on a suspended license.

“I would have been burned in the truck because I was pinned and I was crushed in there from my knees,” Brice said.

Brice said her daughter made it out safely. But she was still trapped with her grandson and their four dogs. Several people tried to help, including Doug Greenwood.

“I remember hearing somebody yelling for help and I ran over there and didn’t think about anything,” said Greenwood. “I just (saw) the fire and ran over there.”

Greenwood said he pulled the 11-year-old boy out first.

“I sat him on the ground and he was holding a dog and I told him don’t move and I went back for her,” said Greenwood. “I didn’t think I could do anything. She was pinned to the dashboard.”

Greenwood said he somehow managed to pull her out to safety.

“We looked back before we got her to the ground and her seat was engulfed already,” Greenwood said.

Greenwood doesn’t consider himself a hero. He said he was in a motorcycle accident 12 years ago and survived.

“I had to relearn everything I do today in the last 12 years,” he said. “So I was just paying it forward because I shouldn’t have been here either.”

As for Wallace, police said she was charged with drunk driving. Her next court date is scheduled for later this week. Court records show she has since bonded out of jail.
