Man loses home to tornado Wednesday, continues to deliver mail

KOKOMO, Ind. (WISH) — Postmaster Dennis Sweeney continued on with his job duties on Wednesday, even after finding out his home had been destroyed from one of the eight tornadoes that went through Howard County.

Sweeney, who lives in the area of Cedar Crest that suffered massive damages, says that he returned home after delivering the mail to see that only one wall and a bed remained in the pile of rubble.

His biggest concern, however, was the safety of his dog, Bella, who he says was rescued by his neighbor during the storm.

“It really is a miracle,” Sweeney said. “I came home to a house destroyed and she was right there on the bed.”

Sweeney, who has been working in postal service for 31 years, is currently staying with is daughter-in-law while he finds housing.

After Wednesday’s tornado damages, Kokomo post offices will remain open on Thursday.

Carriers will continue to deliver mail to safe areas.
