Henry Co. traffic stop leads to meth bust

HENRY COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – A recent traffic stop in Henry County lead to the seizure of more than nine pounds of crystal methamphetamine.

According to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was conducting a traffic stop along I-70 westbound on August 24, at 12:30 p.m. when the deputy noticed a number of signs indicating criminal activity.

The deputy on scene smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle, and the illegal substance was also out in plain view inside the vehicle.

Additional officers from the Richmond Police Department and the Henry County Sheriff’s Department were called to the scene.  During a probable cause search, it was discovered that the vehicle’s doors had been tampered with, showing signs of tool markings.

One of the officers was able to look down inside the panels of one of the doors and noticed several large black plastic wrapped packages of crystal methamphetamine. A look inside another of the door panels revealed a large zip lock baggy of methamphetamine.

In all, 9.22 pounds of crystal meth was found during the traffic stop, worth nearly $375,000.

The driver and owner of the vehicle, 36-year-old Alton Taylor III of Henderson, Nevada and a passenger in the vehicle 31-year-old Michael Degrate of Las Vegas, Nevada were taken into custody.

Both men are currently being held in the Henry County Jail and face preliminary charges of dealing methamphetamine and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
