Inmate escapes during work assignment in North Carolina

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) – An inmate is on the run after escaping from a work assignment in Elizabeth City, North Carolina Tuesday afternoon.

Law enforcement officials are looking for 22-year-old Kyle Austin. He escaped shortly after 3 p.m. while working at the Elizabeth City maintenance garage.

Around 2:40 p.m., police said officers were dispatched to the area of West Ehringhaus Street near Pritchard Street to catch Austin. Austin was seen running on Pritchard Street towards the McDonald’s, but was last seen running toward Pritchard Street near Hariot Drive.

Austin was serving a sentence for selling drugs and was scheduled to be released in April 2017.

Officials said he is from Kill Devil Hills and may be on his way to Dare County or the Outer Banks.
