Motorcyclist dies in single vehicle crash

COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) — A motorcyclist was found dead late Thursday evening by the Columbus Police Department.

According to 24-Hour News 8’s partner, The Republic, 18-year-old Xavier Maurice Scrogham’s motorcycle went off the east side of Sunland Road and struck a telephone pole guide wire.

The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department said Scrogham was found at about 11:43 p.m. Monday after Duke found a single tire track.

The Republic said he was traveling east on Sunland when instead of turning left, he went straight and off the roadway.

Police said he was thrown from the motorcycle. He was wearing a helmet when the accident happened.

Authorities said that the motorcyclist was involved in a previous chase with the Nashville Police Department around 11:36 p.m. They said he was traveling southbound on U.S. 31 near Taylorsville going an excess of 100 mph. The off-duty Nashville officer said Scrogham had no license plate. The officer ended up losing sight of the motorcycle and the chase ended.

A visitation is scheduled from 4 – 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Norman Funeral Home in Hope.
