Burglars target Franklin Township neighborhood

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — IMPD is looking for the suspect who broke into a Franklin Township home while a couple slept. It happened early Sunday morning at the Chessington Grove Subdivision off of Ferguson Road near Hanna Avenue.

According to a police report, the burglar or burglars got in through the back sliding glass door. The homeowners called police.

When they got to their garage, they noticed the garage door was opened. Their vehicle was on and in reverse, but the parking break was also on. Police believe the would-be thief didn’t know how to release the parking break and therefore took off, leaving the car.

A number of other neighbors said when they woke up, they noticed their back yard fence gates had been opened. Police said it’s possible the suspects were going from home to home, trying to get inside through patio doors.

Terry Bynum found his gate open, but the suspect was not able to get inside his home.

“The locks on these doors are not that good. If somebody wanted to get in and their was not a brace on the door, they probably could’ve broken the lock and gotten in,” he said.

IMPD Sgt. Kendale Adams has this advice, “It is best to put some type of device, piece of wood…there are devices you can get at the local hardware stores, they can block the door for opening.”

So far, neighbors have not reported any missing items. However, police urge people to keep door secure. They also encourage people to invest in alarm systems.
