Multiple cars strike, kill bicyclist in Fishers

FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) – Police are investigating after a deadly crash in Fishers killed a bicyclist late Tuesday night.

Fishers police say they responded to a scene around 11 p.m. Tuesday in the intersection of 126th Street and State Road 37. The crash involved two vehicles and one bicycle.

Police said the bicyclist was riding westbound on 126th Street when he crossed State Road 37 in front of southbound traffic. Police said he crossed traffic when the light was red.

The bicyclist was hit by a 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe driving southbound on State Road 37. Several seconds later the bicyclist was hit by a black 1999 Honda Accord that was also traveling southbound on State Road 37. Police said the traffic light was green for both drivers.

Police pronounced the bicyclist dead on the scene. He has been identified as 26-year-old Elias Bonilla of Fishers.

Investigators said that Bonilla drove through a red light at 126th Street and State Road 37.

Police said drugs and alcohol are not a factor at this time. There are also no criminal charges at this time.

Fishers police sergeant Wayne Druellinger is trying to warn people so that this doesn’t happen again.

“If people are going to be out on their bicycles at night, especially in unlit areas such as this, we just ask that you use caution,” Druellinger said.

He said police recommend you wear the proper safety equipment including very reflective outerwear and helmets.

Both drivers are cooperating with the investigation. There are no criminal charges at this time.
