Indianapolis man reports car stolen twice in a week

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A 70-year-old Indianapolis man says his car was stolen twice in one week.

Modibo Lumumba, who lives near 30th Street and Mitthoefer Road, said police recovered his car after it had been stolen on Saturday, but four days later it was taken again.

“I’m retired, but I still do volunteer work and my pick up my grandkids and stuff like that,” he said.

Those activities are on hold after his white 1997 Chevy Malibu was stolen from right outside his apartment.

“Saturday night I was on my way to the drugstore and when I came out my car was gone,” he explained.

He said his window had been left rolled down and he thinks that’s how someone got inside. It’s still unclear how that person started the car. According to a police report, the steering column was not damaged when police recovered the vehicle.

Lumumba says after that he made sure to keep his doors locked and windows rolled up, but it happened again just four days later at the same spot outside his apartment complex.

“It was still, you know, like shocking that somebody would do something like that and then the second time around…it’s a little too much to describe. I wouldn’t wish it on nobody,” Lumumba said.

He’s hoping police are once again able to find his car. For now, he says he’ll rely on his wife’s car to get around.

Police say detectives are still looking for suspects. They’re also still trying to determine if the same person is responsible for taking his car both times.
