Steven Avery attorney rewords tweet about Dassey announcement

MANITOWOC COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) – The attorney for Steven Avery suggested on Twitter that Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel would make an announcement Friday regarding the case of Brendan Dassey, but later deleted that tweet.

On Thursday evening, Kathleen Zellner tweeted a picture of Ryan Ferguson, a man she helped free after he was wrongly convicted of murder in Missouri, holding up a sign reading, “It is over.” The tweet was deleted about 20 minutes later, but it was shared dozens of times.

Early Friday morning, Zellner tweeted a similar message, but removed reference to an announcement coming on Friday.

Schimel spoke with WISN in Milwaukee on Thursday, saying, “I’m not prepared to make any announcements on that yet. We have made some decisions, but I’m not prepared to announce that right now.”

Aug. 12, a federal judge ruled Dassey’s murder conviction in the 2005 death of freelance photographer Teresa Halbach in Manitowoc County would be overturned. The judge ordered Dassey should be released from prison within 90 days unless prosecutors decide to retry him.

Avery was also convicted in Halbach’s death. The case garnered national attention following the release of the Netflix docu-series “Making a Murderer.”

Avery is in the process of appealing his conviction. Zellner filed a motion Aug. 26, asking for more time to test blood evidence.
