Child badly burned after LPD says kids played with gasoline near bonfire

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – An 8-year-old boy was flown to an Indianapolis hospital after being severely burned in a bonfire Sunday evening.

In a press release, Lafayette police said they believed the boy was burned because “juveniles were playing with gasoline in the vicinity of a bonfire.”

Medics and fire personnel responded to a possible structure fire in the 1800 block of N. 15th Street around 10:30 p.m.

They found the 8-year-old in the back yard with burns all over his body. Police are calling the injuries “life-threatening.”

Several other people who tried to put the fire out suffered severe burns. They were treated and released at local hospitals.

It is not clear if the injured 8-year-old was one of the juveniles playing with gasoline.

Police continue to investigate evidence found at the scene.
