Bloomington Police investigate report of rape during home invasion

BLOOMINGTON (WISH) – Bloomington Police are investigating after a woman reported she had been raped during a home invasion.

It happened early Monday morning at the Knight’s Landing apartment complex.

Police say they got the call around 6:30 a.m. A woman told officers she woke up to find a man standing over her bed. She says he tied her up, raped her and then left.

She says he took her cell phone with him.

“Terrifying. You never really expect it will be that close to where you live and I mean I’ve heard of things happening, but I never would have thought that I live in a place that something so terrible could’ve happened. It just makes you feel unsafe,” said Katelyn Barron.

Barron lives in Knights Landing and is a recent Indiana University graduate.

Bloomington Police said there were no signs of forced entry in this case. They’re not sure how the man got into the victim’s apartment, she told police she locked her door.

Barron said she wants to see increased security at the apartment complex. We asked apartment management if they were aware of the incident and if they would be doing anything different. They declined to comment.

“It would just be good to know that there’s stuff happening to just make sure this won’t ever happen again,” said Barron.

Police say they only have a vague description of the suspect, saying the woman reported he had a southern accent.

A spokesperson for IU said they did not send any type of alert out to students as this did not occur on campus or adjacent to campus.

WISH-TV reached out to authorities to find out if the victim is a student, but we’ve yet to hear back.
