INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – One man has died and another is still in critical condition after a crash on I-65 when their vehicle slammed into the back of a semi-truck.
The accident happened just before 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon on I-65 southbound near mile marker 111, after the semi-truck slowed for an accident that occurred moments earlier.
All lanes of I-65 southbound were closed momentarily while emergency crews responded to the multi-vehicle accident.
Authorities also said a hazmat team was dispatched after 25 gallons of diesel and other vehicle fuel spilled from the accident.
About an hour after the initial crash, Indiana State Police said one lane was opened as well as the Fletcher/Ohio collector.
After being successfully extricated from the dump truck by the Indianapolis Fire Department, police said that the two patients were being transported to the hospital.
Two firefighters received stitches after head and hand injuries from responding to the incident.
The driver of semi was not injured in the accident.
The crash remains under investigation.
