City of Indy, Christian Theological Seminary partnering in effort to reduce poverty

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH)  – Indianapolis is joining the Christian Theological Seminary as a community partner as an effort to reduce poverty in the community.

According to a release, Mayor Joe Hogsett announced the partnership for the Faith & Action Project on Wednesday.

Indianapolis will collaborate on the project, providing resources, tools and data to help guide the process as well as a commitment to the implementation of the initiative.

Beginning in 2017, the project will select three projects each year to earn Faith & Action awards of $50,000, $20,000 and $10,000. The awards will fund the most promising and innovative programs to be replicated.

“The systemic poverty facing our city, demands large-scale, innovative strategies that address the deep-seeded, root causes that challenge our neighborhoods and stymie the progress of our city,” said Mayor Hogsett. “I’m encouraged by the vision and leadership of Christian Theological Seminary as well as the support of the Mike and Sue Smith Family fund and know that together, we can help create a brighter future for Indianapolis.”

Mayor Hogsett is hosting a free public kickoff event on Sept. 29: “Poverty, equality and opportunity: What’s a community to do?”

New York Times columnist David Brooks, national talk show host Tavis Smiley, and moderator Dr. Leah Gunning Grancis will join Hogsett.

The event is open to the public and free. Guests must have a ticket to attend. Click here to reserve your ticket.
