Man accused of attacking Purdue professor

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A Purdue professor said he’s scared for his life after he claims he was attacked in front of his home.

It all started around 5:45 p.m. Saturday in the West Lafayette Walmart parking lot. According to a report from the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office, the victim was driving in the lot when a car came up behind his vehicle, blew its horn and passed him.

The victim said he continued to drive behind the vehicle until it turned off into the Country Squire Apartments. That’s when he said the vehicle turned around and followed him to his home.

Once home, he said the passenger, 21-year-old Austin Bradley Gregory, jumped out of the car and began attacking him.

The victim said after being knocked to the ground, the driver of the car was yelling at Gregory to kill the victim as he kicked him in the head and back.

However, Gregory told deputies a different story.

Gregory said he and the car’s driver followed the victim after being ran off the road after an argument in the parking lot. He said when they stopped in front of the victim’s home to write down the license plate number, the victim reached into the car and grabbed him.

But witness reports said the victim never made it to the car or reached into the car before getting punched.

The victim was treated at a local hospital and Gregory was arrested on a preliminary charge of battery.

Gregory bonded out of the jail Wednesday. It’s now up to the prosecutor to pursue further charges.

The altercation has been reported to the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

A spokesperson for the organization said it’s asking for charges to be brought against the driver of the vehicle as well as compensation for medical bills.

Both the victim and the Council on American-Islamic Relations declined a recorded interview with News 18.
