Fort Wayne teen helps elderly woman down an escalator
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) A photo of a Fort Wayne teen helping an elderly woman down an escalator at Glenbrook Mall is warming the hearts of people all across the world.
Leah Kerr of North Manchester shared the photo on Facebook. Late last month Leah Kerr went shopping with her grandmother, Carma Greathouse. They were heading to the food court when Leah, with her hands full and helping her two small children, realized her grandma was still at the top of the escalator.
“I couldn’t take that first step. I couldn’t,” Greathouse explained. “I just couldn’t take it.”
People were squeezing by, some even bumping into Greathouse to pass her.
“I said, ‘Lord you got to help me,’ under my breath. Here come a young gentleman and he took my hand and he said, ‘Can I help you get down the escalator?’ and I said, ‘Sure’,” Greathouse said.
That man was 19-year-old Alujwyon Lowery.
“We saw so many people just passing her by and she is hesitant to get on the escalator so I was thinking the whole time that I should go help her,” Lowery said.
Without hesitating Lowery took her hand.
“So we went down the escalator hand-in-hand talking all the way down and he just the most wonderful gentleman I’ve ever seen,” Greathouse said.
It’s warming hearts all across the world and has been shared more than 6,000 times on one website alone.
“I really posted it hoping my that it would possibly get back to the man that helped Grandma,” Kerr.
It was a small act that Lowery may not have known would make such an impact to Greathouse.
“My husband passed away and he always helped me get on, so I have no one anymore,” Greathouse said.
Lowery said it was a no brainer when it came to helping Greathouse.
“I can’t see somebody troubled and just walk past them. It’s just not me,” Lowery said.
It was a simple act, only lasting a few seconds, but it meant the world to one family who now calls him their angel.
“It’s just nice to see,” Kerr said. “I hope my kids would do the same thing in that situation.”
“He helped me and he was just my angel at that time,” Greathouse said.
