Henry County woman outraged over investigation of son’s deadly motorcycle crash

HENRY COUNTY (WISH) — A Henry County woman said she is outraged after learning the outcome of a year-long investigation involving the death of her son.

Cory Hawkins, 20, died in a crash when his motorcycle was hit by another car in Spiceland last summer.

Tammy Hawkins spent this past year waiting for answers.

She said her family met with the prosecutor from Henry County almost two weeks ago.

She said he told her family about the charge he was planning to file against the other driver. Hawkins argued that charge is not enough.

“Only thing I can think is to get justice for him. As a mom, I feel like that’s my job. That’s the only job I have right now,” said Hawkins.

Hawkins said she is struggling to find the strength to carry on without her son.

“I miss his voice, I miss his hugs, just miss everything about him,” she said.

Hawkins said she saw her son just hours before the crash.

“The last thing I said to him is that I love him and to be careful and let me know when you make it home and he gave me a kiss and he left,” she said.

But when she didn’t hear from him she became worried. She said she was heading to his house to check when she came across the crash.

“I rolled up on the crash site they already taken him to the hospital but his bike was in pieces,” she said.

It happened at State Road 3 and Holwager Road in Spiceland last July.

According to court documents, the driver was identified as Stephanie Lee, 30. She told investigators she was waiting for two cars to pass before turning into the gas station.  She told them she saw no other traffic and began to turn in.

Investigators believe Hawkins was speeding with a faulty headlight, after talking to witnesses. Hawkins’ mother said the claims are not true.

“It’s long fight. It’s been a long fight and I don’t see an ending any time soon,” she said.

According to court documents, Lee’s blood alcohol level a .07, just below the legal limit. Toxicology results show she had marijuana in her system. Prosecutors charged her with operating a vehicle with a controlled substance in the body. Her boyfriend was the passenger in the car.

“She deserves more than just a slap on the wrist for killing my boy,” she said.

The prosecutor said a warrant was issued for Lee’s arrest.
