Pence receives classified security briefing

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Governor Mike Pence received a national security briefing Friday. It took place here in Indianapolis.

The classified national security briefings given to the candidates for President and Vice President are conducted by the same people who perform daily briefings for the President and it must be done in a secure facility.

So that’s why the governor’s motorcade arrived at Stout Field on the south side at mid-morning. Pence went inside for a two hour briefing that is not as detailed as the briefings given to Barack Obama.

He emerged to make brief comments without revealing any about the content of the briefing.

“I hope it gives people great confidence that that in combination with my many years on the Foreign Affairs Committee,” he said, “means that if I have the privilege of serving as Vice President we’ll be ready on day one.”

Governor Pence pointed out that the first candidate briefings were ordered by Harry Truman as he prepared to leave office.

“Hearing the professionalism and the thoroughness of the people from our intelligence and national security team from this country,” he said, “I left the meeting with a great sense of gratitude for the thousands of men and women who see to the safety and security of the American people every day.”

Pence departed without taking questions.
