Indy Housing Agency opening Section 8 waiting list for first time in 2 years

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indianapolis housing agency will give people a chance to get on the program’s waiting list for Section 8 benefits.

According to a release, this is the first time the program’s waiting list has been opened in about two years.

The Indianapolis Housing Agency will select 10,000 people by random lottery at the end of the application period. The application period is open from Monday through Thursday. Those selected and eligible for the program will receive vouches, which helps subsidize rent and utilities.

The waiting list was last open in 2014 and received about 47,000 applications. The agency ended up choosing about 6,000 people.

The agency said they expect even more applications this year.

The Section 8 program has 7,000 people enrolled in the program in Indianapolis. Those who receive vouchers may no more than 30 percent of their monthly income toward rent and utilities in the private rental market. The property owner receives the balance of the rent through the program.

To qualify for the program you must have the following qualification

For example, to qualify for the program, a family of four will need to make $33,350 per year or less. The income restrictions are based on the size of the household.

Application will be accept Monday from noon until Thursday, September 15 at 11:59 p.m. Those qualified will then move to the next phase and be interviewed to make sure they qualify.

Families will learn if they have been selected by October 10.
