Organization loses funding to provide food to students in need

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — When kids are on break from school, what do they eat for breakfast and lunch? Many of them won’t get to eat, at least not one east side neighborhood. The Shepherd Community Center on East Washington Street provides totes full of food, to make sure they don’t go hungry. But, a new challenge is standing in its way.

Lunch time at the Shepherd Academy is typical. It’s loud and kids are…well kids. But what’s not typical is the alarming number of students who rely on Shepherd for food.

“My stomach usually hurts. I be waiting and when I eat it’s just, don’t know,” said fourth grader Exzayvion Love.

Around 95 percent of its students are on free or reduced meals, according to Chief of Program Officer Andrew Green.

“A lot of the kids in the neighborhood don’t have access to two meals a day when they’re not in school,” said Green.

It’s a big concern during school breaks and that’s why the organization gives out totes full of food, to all students in need. They say 80 percent of their students would not be getting three meals a day without the assistance.

“We’re trying to supply breakfast, lunch and dinner and hopefully some snacks as well for each of those days that they’re not in school,” said Green.

But, the organization just learned that the group that typically funds fall break totes, will not be able to help this year. Sherryann Forrest is trying to figure out how she will feed her six grandchildren.

“Who wants to deny their kids something to eat throughout the day. But, without the help, without the tote, there’s not a way I can see stretching,” she said.

Now, Shepherd Community Center, known for helping, is asking for help. They’re asking for donations of food and money to keep the fall break assistance going.

“There’s going to be some light days, some grumbley tummies,” said Forrest.

If you would like to help out, the organization is asking for foods that can create simple meals. They’re also taking cash donations. They’re hoping to put together 350 totes before fall break begins on October 3.
