Charges filed against mother accused of leaving child in hot car

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Formal charges have been filed against a woman accused of leaving a child in a car at the Tippecanoe Mall. 24-Hour News 8’s sister station, WLFI was on scene on June 15 when authorities responded to the scene.

Court documents said when police arrived, the child appeared to be tired and sweaty.

An officer tried to coax the child, who was under the age of 4, to unlock the door. They said at first the child was unsuccessful, saying he was hot while crying. Eventually, the boy succeeded in getting the lock open.

The outside temperature was reportedly 81 degrees that day. Medics said the victim’s body temperature was more than 100 degrees at the time of the rescue.

Court documents said Alezier Simon, 19, arrived at the scene shortly after the child was rescued and admitted she had been in the mall. She is charged with one count of neglect of a dependent.
