BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) – Two students from Batchelor Middle School are being recognized for placing third in this year’s International Discovery Award Competition.

Students in Jeffrey Rudkin’s class, Mya Hagerty and Kate Clarke, placed third at the competition winning $1,000.

The competition awards students on projects that discover positive role models whose impact on history is not well-known.

Hagerty and Clarke created a documentary titled, “A¬†Kristallnacht Survivor Courageously Standing Up to Discrimination.”

It told the story of World War II veteran, Walter Sommers, whose actions helped desegregate lunch counters across Southern Indiana during the Civil Rights Movement.

$14,500 in cash prizes were given away.
