Hot Rod Drag Week arrives at Lucas Oil Raceway

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A grueling test of man and machine begins on Thursday in Indianapolis. Hot Rod Drag Week starts at 8 a.m. at Lucas Oil Raceway. Lucas Oil Raceway will be the fourth stop of a Grueling five day marathon of racing. There are over 400 cars racing and it takes more than just speed to take home the prize of fastest street car in America

Competitors have to travel more than 1,000 miles over five days all in the same car, with the same engine. It all started on Monday at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Oh, which was day one of racing. As soon as competitors finished, they had to travel 100 miles north to the second race track at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Oh.

Day three was at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Mi. On Thursday, competitors will show up at around 8 a.m., many of them have been traveling overnight from Michigan to the mecca of Drag Raceways, Lucas oil Raceway.

It’s not just about clocking the lowest elapsed time on the strips; the racers will also have to drive their vehicles on a specified route to each city. The crews take photos as evidence to prove drivers are sticking to the specified route.

Drivers are on the clock for five straight days and must remain alert to all rules.

They are not allowed to have a trailer or support cars along the way. There are different classes of cars in different divisions but the rules stay the same when they are at the drag track – fastest car wins.

The winner at the end has the lowest average elapsed time for all the racing. Drivers will head back to Hebron after Thursday for the final day of racing.

If you would like to come watch the action tickets are still available.
