Work nearing completion on Indiana Bicentennial Plaza

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Officials say construction work is nearly finished on the Bicentennial Plaza being built outside the Indiana Statehouse.

The $2 million plaza project is converting what had been a street west of the Statehouse into a pedestrian mall with a fountain and a 25-foot-tall sculpture inspired by the torch on the state flag.

State Bicentennial Commission director Perry Hammock tells WIBC-FM that the plaza work is 90 percent completed and will be ready to serve as the finish line for the statewide bicentennial torch relay on Oct. 15. A symbolic lighting of the sculpture is planned for that ceremony.

The plaza area has the site of many public events and ceremonies, including gubernatorial inaugurations and the 2003 funeral of Gov. Frank O’Bannon.
