Fishers football kicker wins Kohl’s Kicking national player of the week

FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) – A Hamilton Southern Schools (HSE) football player is getting national attention, all thanks to his leg.

Last week, against rival, Hamilton Southeastern High School, Fishers High School’s Ben Norton made four field goals, and three extra points, including a school record 52 yard kick.

A distance that caught the eye of a national kicking group Kohl’s Kicking. This week, they named him one of seven finalists for national player of the week.

On Friday, he won.

“When I was little it was kind of like a dream to like get up to level where you’re kind of recognized,” Norton said.

The junior took over kicking duties last year. Ever since then, he’s set his sights on being the best.

“I’ve always wanted to beat the school record because a guy that I’ve worked with for a really long time held it, so that’s been a goal of mine to get that school record,” Norton said.

The national attention didn’t come out of nowhere.  His coaches said he works as hard as anyone to put the ball through the upright.

“It’s a huge deal,” Fishers football offensive coordinator Michael Kelly said. “It means a lot in terms of notoriety for him, and deservingly so, he’s put in the time and the effort to receive this recognition.”

Norton isn’t done yet. While the weekly honors are nice, he’s going to keep working his craft to propel him to college.

Lofty goals for someone who doesn’t want to be called anything other than the position that’s putting him in the spotlight.

“Other than my real name, it’s just, kicker,” Norton said. “That’s what they call me.”

As part of winning national player of the week, Kohl’s Kicking gives him a write up on its website. Right now, Norton is listed as a four star recruit.

Norton isn’t the first Central Indiana kicker to make the list. Kohl’s Kicking said a Center Grove student was named a finalist last year, but didn’t win.
