Paul Ryan campaigns for Todd Young

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WISH) – House Speaker Paul Ryan campaigned for U.S. Senate candidate Todd Young Friday.

It’s part of the effort by Washington Republicans to maintain control of the Senate.

Ryan was the headliner at a lunchtime fundraiser in Fort Wayne that was meant to help Rep. Young catch up in the money race. He has a long way to go to match Democrat Evan Bayh.

It was a private event held at a country club and Ryan didn’t speak with reporters. The Speaker came at the invitation of Young’s campaign but clearly has a personal interest in the outcome of Young’s race.

“He very enthusiastically recognized that control of the U.S. Supreme Court and composition of the U.S. Senate is going to come down to probably this Senate race,” said Young, “and so that’s what brings him to town.”

Just three days ago former President George W. Bush made a similar appearance to benefit the Young campaign.

“We need partners to win these races,” said Young. “We need to mobilize the conservatives here in this area and Paul Ryan’s gonna help us do it.”

Evan Bayh, meantime, is also in Fort Wayne Friday night. He just picked up some meaningful support from the Senate Majority PAC. It’s paying for $700,000 worth of attack ads aimed at Todd Young.
