University criticized for using $1M of librarian’s gift to buy football scoreboard

DURHAM, N.H. (AP) – The University of New Hampshire is being criticized for deciding to spend one fourth of a $4 million gift from a longtime library employee on a video scoreboard in the football stadium.

Robert Morin worked as a cataloguer in the Dimond Library for decades. The 77-year-old left the money to UNH following his death in 2015.

The school plans to use $2.5 million for an expanded career center. The library will receive $100,000.

But critics say the $1 million for the scoreboard for is a poor use of the funds. Gov. Maggie Hassan said Friday there were more appropriate uses, such as a new science building or holding down tuition costs.

School officials say the money for the library was the only “dedicated gift,” meaning the rest was unrestricted.
