Woman critically injured by boat propellers during outrigger canoe race in Hawaii

MAUI, HI (KHON) – A woman in her 60s was hospitalized in critical condition Saturday after she was reportedly caught in the propellers of a boat during a canoe race on Maui.

At 8:54 a.m. Saturday, September 17, 2016, emergency crews in West Maui responded to a person injured in an apparent boating accident at DT Fleming Beach Park in Kapalua.

A woman Curtis Town on the Big Island, was injured during the Pailolo Challenge outrigger canoe race from Maui to Molokai and was brought ashore at DT Fleming Beach with critical injuries.

Ocean safety lifeguards on duty at the beach began immediate life-saving efforts until paramedics and fire personnel arrived at 9:01 a.m. Emergency responders then performed CPR on the woman.

Paramedics eventually transported the woman to the Napili Park where a medevac helicopter picked up the patient and flew her to the Maui Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
