Police: Beech Grove football coach punched ref repeatedly after ejection

BEECH GROVE, Ind. (WISH) — A football coach in Beech Grove has been arrested after being accused of assaulting a referee.

37-year-old James Gann was arrested on Saturday. Gann told investigators that he went onto the field to check on his injured son during a game. Gann said the referee was “nitpicking” every call in the game was quick to threaten ejections.

When he went to check on his son, Gann said the referee also went to check on him and that the referee told him not to bump into him. Gann said the referee threw a flag and ejected him, then Gann said he punched him.

The victim said Gann bumped him out of the way and began yelling at him before punching him three or four times before standing over him and taunting him.

One witness described it as a sucker punch to investigators.
