Wisconsin teen pleads no contest to putting dry-erase board cleaner in teacher’s drink
OCONTO, Wis. (WBAY) – A Gillett teen will be sentenced in November for a prank gone wrong.
Gavin Gilbertson, 17, pleaded no contest Wednesday to a charge of placing foreign objects in edibles. Two other charges, second-degree recklessly endangering safety and disorderly conduct, were dropped. He avoided a trial that was scheduled to begin next week.
The other defendant in the case, Hailey Brock, 18, reached a similar plea agreement in July.
Gilbertson was a student at Gillett High School last October when he put dry erase board cleanser in the shop teacher’s soda. Investigators say Brock suggested the prank, and Gilbertson said he put one or two squirts into the soda bottle. The teacher was treated at a hospital for a burning in the throat and stomach.
Gilbertson will be 18 years old when he’s sentenced on November 9.
The felony conviction has a maximum penalty of three-and-a-half years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Brock was sentenced earlier this month. She received 14 days in jail, 32 hours of community service, and two years on probation. According to online court records, she was ordered not to have any contact with the teacher. Her conviction will be expunged if she works or attends school full-time and stays out of trouble with the law for those two years.
