Brownsburg teen accused of trying to join ISIS due in court Friday

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Brownsburg teenager accused of trying to join ISIS is due in court Friday.

This would be 18-year-old Akram Musleh’s first appearance before a judge since a grand jury indicted him on federal charges earlier this month.

Musleh is facing a charge of attempting to provide material support or resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization. According to court documents, Federal prosecutors believe that material support would have been in the form of personnel. They said Musleh was going to join the terrorist group.

Musleh allegedly was traveling to ISIL territory when he was arrested at an Indianapolis bus station on June 21. His home in Brownsburg was then searched for evidence.

This isn’t the first time investigators have looked into Musleh. Back in 2013, he posted videos of an Islamic terrorism leader to Facebook. At that time, FBI investigators met with Musleh and school officials at Brownsburg High School to try to steer him away from radical extremism. A year later, investigators say he bought an ISIL flag.

Musleh’s court hearing is set for 12:30 p.m. Friday.

His trial has been scheduled for November 14. He has entered a plea of not guilty.
