Lafayette man sentenced to 55 years for double homicide
TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – A Lafayette man was sentenced to 55 years behind bars for his roll in the murders of two people at a Lafayette home in August of 2015.
Thirty-four-year-old Matthew Oertel received his sentence Friday afternoon.
Oertel pleaded guilty on July 14 to two counts of felony murder and one count of being a serious violent felon in possession of a firearm.
Co-defendant Jacob Guffey is scheduled for sentencing in October.
Both men were charged in August 2015 for the murders of 36-year-old Aaron Hunter Jr. and 46-year-old Terry Smith Jr., who both lived in a home on Perrine Street. Both men died of gunshot wounds.
