State Police Alliance endorses John Gregg

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Democrat John Gregg picked up a big endorsement Friday in the race for governor.

The union that represents state troopers threw its support behind Gregg in a news conference at the Statehouse.

The endorsement was issued after members heard from both Gregg and Republican Eric Holcomb at a “meet the candidates” night.

“It was apparent in speaking with Mr. Gregg,” said Wayne Flick, executive director of the State Police Alliance, “that he respects and honors our Indiana state troopers.”

It’s the first time the State Police Alliance has endorsed a Democrat for governor.

“It’s not lost on me the importance of this endorsement,” Gregg said. “We are committed to public safety and supporting law enforcement in Indiana.”

Gregg has also been endorsed by the Indiana chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police.

Earlier this week, Eric Holcomb showed off endorsements from the state chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business and the Indiana Association of Realtors, groups that typically endorse Republicans.

A spokesman for the State Police Alliance said Gregg promised to pursue a pay raise for troopers, which they haven’t had since 2008.
